Project title: The Grove
Client: Private Client
Value: Private
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Role: RIBA Stages 0-6
Details: This project involved works to a Listed Georgian terrace which, following years of poor maintenance, had reached a state of near collapse. The works included the sensitive restoration of the existing listed schoolhouse back to its intended original use as a single-family dwelling, with a complementary but contemporary extension to the rear to provide additional living accommodation at ground floor level, together with new access to the rear with a garage and utility facilities. The extension was formed from a blade wall of random coursed ashlar of local Blaxter sandstone to match the original house and is capped with a reclaimed slate roof. The glazed infill connections between this and the main house allow a connection to the landscape which breaks the new garden spaces into three distinct areas, giving a hierarchy of public and private space. The existing elevation to the main house was carefully dismantled and reinstated to resolve existing structural issues and internally, great care was taken to maintain and restore the details of the existing house, from ornate plasterwork to period ironmongery.
