×
Project title: North Shields Metro Station
Client: Nexus
Location: Newcastle
Role: RIBA Stages 1-7
Details: Sadler Brown were appointed as architects for the re-invigoration of the Tyne and Wear Metro System. The £600m project involved the refurbishment of the existing stations which were built in 1975. North Shields is the sixth busiest station on the Tyne and Wear Metro network and has operated as a railway station since 1839 when it was the terminus of the Newcastle to North Shields Railway, one of the oldest lines in the country. Under the £8.5m scheme, North Shields has been refurbished with new platforms, ramps, staircases and an improved entrance. For the first time, the site also has lifts to the platforms as well as smart ticketing machines and gated barriers. The station is seen as a major gateway to North Tyneside, with more than two million passengers a year. It acts as an important interchange, providing bus, ferry and taxi links to other parts of the region.
